Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has become a buzzword across aesthetic and regenerative medicine — attached to everything from facials to sexual wellness treatments to breast rejuvenation. With that popularity has come a fair amount of marketing hype, and it’s worth separating what PRP actually does from what’s implied by branded names and social media trends.
What PRP Actually Is
PRP is derived from a sample of your own blood, processed through a centrifuge to separate and concentrate platelets — the components responsible for clotting and, importantly, releasing growth factors involved in tissue repair. This concentrated plasma is then injected or applied to a targeted area, where those growth factors can support collagen production, new blood vessel formation, and tissue regeneration.
Because the plasma comes from your own body, there’s no risk of an allergic reaction to a foreign substance and no synthetic filler involved — which is a genuine advantage over some alternative treatments.
Myth: “It Works Instantly”
PRP is regenerative, not immediate. The body needs time — typically several weeks — to respond to the growth factors and begin remodeling tissue. Any treatment promising overnight transformation from PRP alone should raise questions.
Myth: “One Treatment Fixes Everything”
Results vary by patient, treatment area, and the underlying issue being addressed. Many PRP protocols — whether for facial rejuvenation, sexual wellness, or breast treatments — are designed as a short series (often 2–3 sessions), sometimes followed by periodic maintenance. Anyone promising permanent results from a single session isn’t giving you the full picture.
Myth: “It’s Purely Cosmetic”
While PRP is widely used aesthetically, it has legitimate regenerative applications across medicine — orthopedics, wound healing, and sports medicine have used PRP for years before it became popular in aesthetics. The same underlying science applies whether it’s used for a joint injury or a Vampire Facial ® .
Myth: “Any Med Spa Can Do It Properly”
PRP preparation and injection technique matter. Centrifuge protocols, injection depth, sterile technique, and — critically — an accurate diagnosis of what’s actually causing your concern all affect outcomes and safety. A treatment that looks the same on Instagram can be performed very differently depending on who’s behind it and what assessment preceded it.
What a Legitimate PRP Treatment Should Include
· A real medical history and physical assessment before treatment
· A clear, honest discussion of expected timeline and realistic outcomes
· Transparency about the number of sessions typically required
· Proper sterile technique and appropriate equipment
· A physician or closely supervised clinical team, not a purely aesthetic technician working without oversight
